COLUMBUS — Ohio residents filing their individual state income tax forms this year will see a new check-off option allowing them to donate all or part of their refunds to the Ohio Historical Society.

It says the donations will go toward a matching grants program that will pay for local history projects around the state. Those projects could include repairs for old buildings, educational programs, archaeological digs and archiving efforts.

Executive Director Burt Logan said the society works with about 900 historical entities in Ohio, and the new grants program will broaden efforts to preserve state history.

The historical society is one of four options on the tax form. Taxpayers also can donate refund money to benefit injured veterans, endangered wildlife and natural areas.
