Local Corner: Medina’s Paige Kovalchik shines at Kent State

KENT — Paige Kovalchik turned out to be a jewel at the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North, a softball extravaganza held at Kent State University.

Kovalchik, a Medina junior, not only was one of 322 athletes chosen from a pool of almost 4,000, she was named first-team All-QDS, earning one of four spots available to “cage animals” at the event.

Cage animal was the name given to a high-intensity game between a pitcher and batter, complete with an umpire.

Kovalchik also earned the right to participate in an MVP game. Overall, she hit .717 with four walks at the event.

Gymnastics

Medina Gymnastics Academy recently competed at the Lake Erie Gymnastics School Meet, with Avery Kasian placing first in the all-around in Level 6. Sadie Palmer Wilcox also won the all-around. Other placers were Lea Schroth, McKinley Kerans, Ellie Robertson, Madeline Alexander, Addison Kasian and Megan Deighton. Jenna Sterk competed.

In Level 4, Bethany Yu won three events and the all-around, while Morgan Bakalar, Allyson Bresnahan, Mackenzie Yu, Madelyn Deighton, Colleen Johnson and Hope Gormley also had outstanding meets. Other participants were Mara Mack, Peyton Anderson, Cassidie Thomas, Katie Strzalka and Emma Nagy.

Brianne Jenkins won the all-around in prep optional bronze, which also featured solid showings from Emily Szabados, Kensi Cleckner, Amber Wehrmeyer, Sunny Rieger, Abby Garbutt, Jessica Chessey and Sarah Kosik.

In prep optional silver, Erin Sievers won all four events and the all-around. Julia Parmelee and Danielle Kendel also placed in numerous events.

MGA also took part in the Above the Barr Red Carpet Invitiational, with numerous gymnastics turning in outstanding performances.

Bowling

Jim Taylor rolled a perfect game and Randy Biedron had a 785 series in the Jo Jo’s Sports Bar League at AMF Medina Lanes. In action from other weeks in that league, Joey Lupica had an 810 series. Dee Thomas had 220-617 in the Plan B Photography League. She also had 229-630. In the Mixed Couples League, Nikki Stiteler had 256-706 to lead all bowlers.

Football

Medina Gridiron Youth Football is now conducting registration for spring flag football. Divisions range from 5-6 to 11-12 years of age. In-person registration will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Summa health center on state Route 18 in Medina. For more information, visit medinagridiron.com.
