Courthouse restoration project is on hold

MEDINA — County officials remain unsure where funding will come from this year to continue a restoration project of the courthouse and clock tower.

County Administrator Chris Jakab said Friday the exterior of the building is being winterized, and finding money for the courthouse’s roof replacement and new insulation will be revisited in the spring.

“Due to a lack of funding, we’re not sure when the project will continue,” Jakab said.

Repairs were put on hold this fall after insufficient insulation was discovered beneath the existing roof, Jakab has said. Cost of that project was $116,488, and the insulation tab is estimated to add $80,000.

Jakab noted Friday a separate but related window-replacement project at the courthouse will proceed in the spring.

“There is money for that,” he said.

Another project on the back burner is restoring the courthouse clock tower, which has been estimated to cost $258,100.

The project would include repairing the clock hands, replacing supports that have rotted and caused the tower to lean, adding sheet metal, masonry work and repainting the tower.
