Swimming notes: Diving into tourney time
This is the time of year area swimming coaches live for.
It’s the time where teams like Wadsworth get to see if Mike Pavlak can add a third trip to the state meet and bring along a few friends.
The same can be said for Cloverleaf as the Colts can’t wait to see if Addy Ferguson can join the fray for a third time in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100 butterfly.
“We have been training hard and fine-tuning everything to prepare for this week,” Grizzlies coach Autumn Reeves said.
The week she’s talking about is the Division I Sectional Meet at the University of Akron — Buckeye’s Sarah Turner will be headed to Lakewood for the Division II meet — and Reeves is stoked.
“Mike is excited to swim well and he is focused on meeting his end of the year goal,” she said. “The boys know that they swam well and we have worked on little things to swim faster. They are all very motivated to swim well. It will be a great weekend for both the boys and girls programs.”
The same can be said for Ferguson, who is the three-time defending 100 butterfly champion — she holds the sectional record in the event (57.49) — and two-time 100 backstroke titlist.
“We’re hoping with the rest and good practices that we’ll do well this week,” Colts coach Mike McGee said. “I’m excited. I know Addy likes the competition. It won’t be easy that’s for sure, but she’ll give it her all.”
Brunswick
Selena Pasadyn, and Lizzy Gehlmann are back to defend their runner-up finish at sectional last year in the 200 medley relay and are on a hot streak. With Hannah McCulloch and Nicolette Crissinger added to the mix, the quartet has broken the school record in back-to-back weeks this season.
Pasadyn reached district in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle and was a part of the 200 free relay as well last year. McCulloch was a district qualifier in the 100 free, 200 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Gehlmann reached in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free relay. Crissinger was a 100 butterfly and 400 free relay district representative.
Chris Makepeace returns as a 50 free and 100 free district qualifier. Ty Talley made it out in the one-meter dive.

On the girls side, Sami Petruzzi and Carolyn Yurkoski return as district qualifiers in the 200 medley relay.
Yurkoski also logged district berths in the 50 free and 100 free.
