Kathleen Ekey debuts today in Australian Open golf tourney
VICTORIA, Australia — Kathleen Ekey will make her debut as an LPGA card member today at the ISBS Handa Women’s Australian Open.
The 25-year-old Sharon Township resident will hit the course in the second-to-last foursome at 2:20 p.m. local time on the No. 1 tee at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
Ekey, a Walsh Jesuit High graduate who was medalist of the 2004 OHSAA tournament, earned her tour card last season by taking the LPGA Futures Tour Player of the Year award.
This won’t be the first LPGA event for Ekey, however. She competed in the 2008 and 2009 U.S. Opens as an amateur.
The Golf Channel will provide televised coverage of all four rounds.
Lexi Thompson, the final champion of the Westfield Junior PGA Championship in 2007, will also compete. Also slated to appear are Vicky Hurst, who finished three spots behind Thompson, and Jane Rah (9th).
