Record night for Blue Devils

BRUNSWICK — If the History Channel show “Top Shot” — a television program chronicling a competition between expert marksmen — is looking for contestants, it might want to head over to Brunswick High School.
Sophomore guards Zach Parker and Ryan Badowski put on a show that would have left even the best shooters with their mouths hanging open in the Blue Devils’ 62-45 win over Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division rival Strongsville on Friday.
The duo combined to hit 15-of-28 3-point attempts — Brunswick broke a team record with 16 overall —and Parker tied the individual school record held by Cory McMahan (Feb. 24, 2007, vs. Avon Lake) and Joe Puch (March 3, 2007, vs. Avon Lake and Jan. 19, 2008, vs. Solon).
“I have seen some good shooting,” Brunswick coach Joe Mackey said. “I don’t think I have ever seen it this good from just two guys. They have a chance to be special.”
Parker (career-high 28 points) had the hot hand early, knocking in five first-half threes — including four in a row — on his way to 17 points as Brunswick built a 33-26 lead.
“I was just feeling it,” Parker said. “If I was open my teammates were getting me the ball and I was getting the ball in the hole. I have had games where I have made some shots, but nothing like this.”
Badowski (career-high 25 points), who missed his first six attempts from behind the arc, caught fire at the start of the second quarter with seven consecutive 3-pointers before finally missing his final attempt in the fourth quarter.
“I wasn’t shooting great at the beginning,” Badowski said. “But you have just got to tell yourself that you’re one of the best shooters in the gym and shoot. That’s what I did.”
When it was all said and done, the two sharpshooters scored 53 of their team’s 62 points.
Senior forward Sean Alexander scored 18 consecutive points for Strongsville, which made 12 3-pointers of its own, on six three 3-pointers and brought the deficit to within two early in the third quarter.
From there, Brunswick took control.
“This is a big one,” Mackey said. “We wanted this one. They beat us twice last year and we thought it was very important for us to get them back this season. One of our goals at the start of the season was to make sure we beat these guys.”
Notes
McMahan was in attendance and was one of the first people to congratulate Parker after the game.
Brunswick won the junior varsity contest 62-48 behind David Reiter’s 14 points.
