Steffas takes third Jim Reynolds Relays title

AVON — For the third straight year, Highland senior Karissa Steffas came away with the top prize in the high jump at Saturday’s Avon Jim Reynolds Relays.

Steffas teamed with Nikki McKenna in the two-person relay event for a combined height of 9 feet, 8 inches. They beat Avon and Avon Lake, which both cleared 9-6.

Individually, Steffas led the field with a jump of 5-2. Under the conditions it was a very good performance. A wintry snow mix hit the venue for the girls high jump competition, making conditions less than optimal.

“I wanted to get 5-4, but under the conditions it was all right,” said Steffas, a three-time regional qualifier. “I’ve been getting it consistently. I don’t like when it’s rainy. I slipped my freshman year, so it’s always in the back of my mind. I broke my left arm at practice. It was the day before regionals. I had won districts (at Lakewood). It was weird. My foot just came out.”

Steffas was also a member of the Hornets’ second-place 4×200-meter relay (1:51.24) and ninth-place 4×400 (4:19.52).

“It’s just whenever it gets wet I think about it,” said Steffas, who plans to play basketball in college at Ohio Northern. “I made regionals the last two years, but I always choke. It’s (the regional) at a new place this year (Austintown Fitch). That’s going to be better because I hated jumping at Amherst. I just couldn’t jump there. Hopefully, this will be better.”

Highland also received a victory on the boys side from its 4×1,600 relay of Zach Davis, Cole Vandenberg, Adam Holowecky and Stuart Arbuckle (18:48.30). The Hornets outdistanced second place CVCA (19:14.94).

Mitch Gordon led the Wadsworth boys with a third-place finish in the 110 hurdles (15.71).
