MEDINA — Cloverleaf boys tennis standout Jacob Dunbar is now a two-time sectional champion.
Dunbar defeated Walsh Jesuit’s Aaron Sandberg 6-2, 6-2 in the Medina Division I Sectional singles final Saturday, completing his 10-set sweep to the title.
The reigning Gazette MVP won 60 out of 65 games at the three-day event, keeping his season record undefeated heading into this week’s Oberlin College District.
As a freshman in 2011, Dunbar claimed the Solon Division I Sectional crown by winning all six of his matches, topped by an upset of No. 1 seed Nolan Marks of Kenston.
This year, though, two-time Suburban League MVP Dunbar found himself in the role of the hunted and successfully defended his top seed throughout the tournament.
All four seeds at Medina held true to form as fellow sophomore Sandberg was No. 2, Hudson’s Steve Boslet was No. 3, and Walsh Jesuit’s Matt Miles was No. 4.
Boslet beat Miles 6-4, 7-5 in the third-place match, which determined their bracket placement at districts.
In the sectional doubles final, second-seeded Andrew Ong and Jarad Pennington of Copley knocked off No. 1 seeds Peter Harris and Noah Hendrickson of Revere 6-1, 7-6(6).
The Indians also beat the Minutemen in the third-place match as No. 4 seeds Austin Aten and Alan Du took down the unseeded duo of George Michalos and Brian Carano
All four of those squads advanced to the district tourney, which begins Thursday at 9 a.m. The top six singles players and six doubles duos at Oberlin will move on to the state tournament in Columbus.
