Boyert paces Medina

AMHERST — The night didn’t finish quite on the upbeat note hoped for, but the Medina girls track team still had plenty to hang its hats on Friday after winning the Amherst Division I District for the second year in a row.
Medina amassed 103 points in outdistancing second-place Lorain (84). Brunswick was fifth with 61½.
Just as they have all season long, the Bees triumphed because they covered the majority of the events better than anyone. The top four placers in each event advance to the Amherst Regional.
The most noteworthy performance by Medina was turned in by senior Anna Boyert in the 1,600 meters. Boyert crushed the 2011 meet record of 4:54.31 set in 2011 by North Royalton’s Hannah Neczypor with a career- and school-record time of 4:50.94.
Boyert pulled away from Avon Lake senior Katy Link (5:03.41) with 700 meters left and was never seriously threatened.
The Medina senior used the energy for her big win in the 1,600 to rally to win the 800 meters in the last 30 meters over Rocky River junior Madi Connelly, 2:13.05 to 2:13.55.
“It was a nice day to come out and run,” Boyert said. “I didn’t race as well as I wanted to last week at conference. There were a lot of good girls in my race (the 1,600). I just wanted to go out and try to get my PR. It was a good race. I’m excited. It’s another step forward to my goals I set for myself.”
Boyert broke her 2010 school record of 4:54 set at the state meet meet as a sophomore.
“The excitement from the 1,600 carried me through the 800,” she said. “I just ran how I felt and tried to stay relaxed.”
Medina was hoping for one final regional ticket in the 4×400, but was disqualified for a false start in the last running event of the meet. The Bees were the No. 2 seed coming out of Wednesday’s semifinal (4:03.27) behind Lorain (3:59.77).
Senior Ali Kovarik was Medina’s other winner, taking the long jump (18-1¼) over Berea sophomore Kyla Paster (17-7¾). She was a regional qualifier in the same event as a junior.
“Oh, my gosh, today was so good,” Kovarik said. “I was really hoping for that (a team title) again this year. It’s more than I can ask for being my senior year. Coming back to win the team championship was amazing.
“It was so disappointing with the 1,600 relay. We were really hoping to do well, but we just have to get past it and look toward regionals.”
Brunswick senior Brianna Neitzel defended her meet title in the 100 meters, defeating Lorain senior Alicia Arnold for the second straight year, 12.21 to 12.25.
“I could hear the way she was breathing when I pulled up to her (at 40 meters),” Neitzel said. “It gave me an idea of how hard she was working vs. how hard I was, and I knew I wasn’t working as hard as I could.”
Neitzel later came back to win again by taking the 400 meters over Olmsted Falls junior Allison Duber, 57.06 to 58.17.
“The strategy is a little different here (at districts) than vs. how I race at the state level,” Neitzel said. “At the state meet I run scared. Usually at this level the girls that burst out of the blocks die at the end. That’s not how I do it. I want to feel strong at the end.”
Berea scored 112 points to take the boy title, its first district crown in over 25 years. Brunswick was second (88) and Medina was fourth (54½).
Junior Tyler Mennear had the Blue Devils’ only win, taking the 3,200 in 9:27.66 over North Royalton’s Caden DeMattie (9:38.69) and Avon Lake’s Trevor Norris (9:39.54). Norris led the race for the first six laps before Mennear took control.
Sophomore Mike Hierholzer of Medina performed up to his No. 1 seeding in the shot put, winning the event over Avon Lake senior Jake Young, 55-4 to 54-11.
