Northeast Ohio teen hailed for saving man from N.Y. river

LEICESTER, N.Y. — An Ohio teenager trained as a lifeguard is being credited for saving a Rochester man who fell into a river at a western New York state park.

Police at Letchworth State Park said 26-year-old Abdulma Alhari was in an area closed to the public when he fell into the Genesee River last Sunday in the park’s Upper Falls area in Livingston County, south of Rochester.

Authorities said 19-year-old Vincent Gill, of Hilliard, jumped into the river and grabbed hold of Alhari, then brought him to shore where he was treated by an emergency crew. Ahari wasn’t injured, but park police ticketed him for entering property closed to the public.

New York State Park Police said they’ll nominate Gill for a civilian lifesaving award for his actions.
