Dueling campaign offices in Medina County

MEDINA — If the presidential elections campaigns in Medina County were a poker game, the Democrats last Tuesday raised the Republicans by opening a new headquarters in Wadsworth.

On Saturday, the Republicans countered with a new headquarters of their own in Medina.

And this Tuesday, the Democrats will open another office — down the block from the Republican headquarters.

The new Republican campaign office is at 951 N. Court St. in the Medina Shopping Center.

The Medina campaign office for President Barack Obama will be at 799 N. Court St. Volunteers will celebrate the opening by making phone calls 5 to 8 p.m., having a potluck and watching the presidential debate starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Kevin Dunn, Medina County Republican Party chairman, said about 200 people stopped by at the Medina office’s opening Saturday, and volunteers gave away about 400 signs.

He said he’s hearing excitement about the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket.

“I think we’re getting real positive feedback for our candidates, especially at the top of the ticket,” Dunn said.

He said volunteers hope to knock on 15,000 doors in Medina County each weekend leading up to the election.

John Welker, chairman of the Medina County Democrats, said volunteers will continue canvassing efforts, and step them up in the weeks leading up to the election. He said he expected Medina County’s support for Obama to be close to where it was in 2008, when Obama captured about 45 percent of the vote.

Nationally though, he expressed confidence that Obama would win. “We’re definitely confident that the president is going to carry the day,” he said. “Granted, it’s going to be close.”

On Saturday, Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin visited Democratic volunteers in Brunswick, to kick off a weekend of canvassing.

That same day, Gov. John Kasich met with Republican volunteers in Strongsville and Rocky River.
