Bette Hewit

Bette (Swartz) Hewit passed away Friday, November 9, 2012, in Medina. She was born to Merrrell and Merna (Barrick) Swartz in Wadsworth, May 4, 1921. She married Merle Hewit of Seville, July 13, 1946.

Bette graduated from Wadsworth High School 1939, studied art at the Cleveland School of Arts and received an interior design degree from Chicago Art School. Bette taught “mosiac” at the Medina Y.W.C.A and designed both of her homes.

Bette was very civic minded, organizing the “Dandelion Club”, an auxiliary of the Lions’ Club in 1955, den mother for Cub Scouts, P.T.A., Booster Club, and involved in the “Bates Festivals” and chairman for Seville’s 175th anniversary, at which time the Gazebo (a replica of the Band Stand that was torn down in the 50s) was placed in the park. She was a member of the Seville Presbyterian Church and was very active for 50 years and the Order of Eastern Stars in Wadsworth. She enjoyed oil painting, reading, Bridge, golf and fishing. Most of all, she enjoyed her family.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Lorraine Hewit of Wadsworth; daugher and son-in-law, Rhonda and Tom Arnold of Creston; four grandchildren, Becky of Akron, Beth of Canton, Shane Arnold, Dawn (Terry) Cortmilia of Wooster; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Bev Hewit of Seville, sister-in-law, Mary Veverka of Wadsworth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents; husband Merle; and sisters, Dorothy Goertner and Eldean Chambers.

Calling hours will be Monday, November 12, 2012, from 3 until 5 P.M. A 5 P.M. Eastern Star Service will be held, followed by a Memorial Service at the Armstrong Funeral Home, 25 Pleasant Street in Seville, with the Reverend Richard Wereley officiating.
