Four juniors are honored on high-school football 1st teams

Black River running back Andrew Vaughn, Cloverleaf safety Devin Cunningham, Highland quarterback Bruce Kinsey and Wadsworth linebacker Nick Winkler were the only Medina County players to earn first-team accolades when the All-Northeast Inland District football teams were announced Thursday by the Associated Press.

Andrew Vaughn

Vaughn was a Division IV first-team selection for the second consecutive season after rushing for 1,567 yards and scoring 122 points. The 6-foot, 180-pounder is well on pace to break the 90-year-old county career scoring record held by Medina’s Erastus “Tunk” Simmons (362-plus).

The incredibly versatile Cunningham gave Cloverleaf a puncher’s chance nearly every week, and the 5-11, 200-pounder was a D-II first-team defensive back due in large part to his five interceptions.

Cunningham was just as impressive with the ball in his hands, compiling 1,227 rushing yards, 525 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns, including three via kickoff return. He also averaged 38.5 yards per punt.

Kinsey was the third wheel in an immensely talented D-II first-team quarterback group that included Pittsburgh recruit Tra’Von Chapman of Kent Roosevelt and Tallmadge four-year starter Anthony Gotto. The 6-1, 170-pound Kinsey accounted for 2,364 yards total offense and 26 touchdowns as the Hornets averaged a school-record 36.5 points per game.

Winkler led the area with 119 total tackles and 14 for loss. He will become the Grizzlies’ first All-Ohio linebacker since Kyle Kurowski (2004) when those teams are announced later this month.

Marking what could be a bright 2013 for the county, Vaughn, Cunningham, Kinsey and Winkler are juniors.

The area fared very well on second teams, as Brunswick’s Garrick Koermer (DL), Keith Yohman (WR) and Brad Darlington (LB) and Wadsworth’s Ryan Looser (DB) were named in D-I, while Highland’s Joe Crowder (OL), Joe Simonis (K) and Cory Moncol (WR) took the same awards in D-II.

Honorable mention selections were: Brunswick’s Dan Yohman (D-I), Danny Stepp (D-I), Nick Roberts (D-I), Medina’s Mitch Doraty (D-I), Wadsworth’s Daryk Maki (D-I), Connor VanFleet (D-I), Martice Jackson (D-I) and Austin White (D-I), Highland’s Mark Vitko (D-II) and Joe Buttita (D-II) and Cloverleaf’s Austin Roberts (D-II) and Austin Smith (D-II), Buckeye’s Rick Monroe (D-III) and Anthony Kisiday (D-III) and Black River’s Austin Phillips (D-IV) and Gabe Eaton (D-IV).
