Local Corner: Highland youth football squad finishes 2nd in state

The Highland Hornets sixth-grade varsity youth football team finished second in the state at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.

Competing in the Gold Division, the Hornets downed Elyria and Olentangy before falling to Marysville in the title game to finish the season at 12-1.

Highland also went 10-0 to win the championship in the Northeast Ohio Youth Football Conference.

Team members were Braeden Clements, Evan French, Jack Gale, Armin Gasser, Preston Gonser, Tyler Grafton, Carson Holowecky, Jack Hoynes, Jack Kohman, Blake Kucinski, Hunter Less, Nick McFadden, Jack McGinty, Charlie Myers, Jack Myers, Manny Penko, Jeff Pietrowski, Bryce Profitt, Jacob Rogers, Tyler Savron, Cole Tessena and Morgan Tifft.

The coaches were Scott Profitt, Ron Less, Greg Myers, Jeff Pietrowski, Jeff Rogers and Bruce Tessena.

In other youth football action, the Medina Mustangs downed Wadsworth Black 33-0 for the American Conference junior varsity title to cap a 10-0 season.

Team members were Connor O’Neill, Chase Henderson, Trenton Rhineberger, Jacob Howard, Patrick Gillespie, Archer Treese, Ryan Gillespie, Sam Whitmore, Brandon Curie, Bayetha Rowell, Evan Smigel, Gavin Rodak, Sean Bush, A.J. Kirlough, Nathan Spatny, Justin George, Kaedin Andrasik, Landon Kistler and James Smigel.

The coaches were Jerry Spatny, Bob Henderson, Toby O’Neill, Craig Kistler, James Smigel, Jon Kirlough, Dave Andrasik, Jeremy George, Brian Epplen and Craig Curie.


Sadie Palmer Wilcox won the balance beam competition for the Level 6 Medina Gymnastics Academy team at the Elite All-Star Classic. Other Level 6 placers were Bethany Yu, McKinley Kerans and Lea Schroth.

Excelling in Level 5 were Hope Gormley, Madelyn Deighton, Addison Kasian, Meghan Deighton, Jenna Stark and Mackenzie Yu.

Top performer in Level 4 were Paige Yu, Colleen Johnson, Courtney Welch, Payton Anderson, Katie Strzalka and Cassidie Thomas.


David Morgan, a 2001 graduate of Black River, was named Northern Ohio PGA Assistant of the Year. Morgan is the assistant golf professional at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk. He is also tournament director of the Lake Erie Junior Golf Association.
