Leona Mildred Sooy

Leona Mildred Sooy, 102, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012, at her home. She was born August 27, 1910, in Pittsfield, to Edward and Lois (West) McConnell.

She graduated from Wellington High School and attended Ashland College. She was a school teacher in Penfield for a few years, before marrying Frank Sooy in 1932. They resided in Homerville before moving to Spencer in 1968.

She was a member of the Spencer United Methodist Church, where she served as the Sunshine Lady for the church’s Women’s Guild. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as cooking, baking, needlework and flower gardening. She had resided safely and comfortably the last 12 years at the J.B. Firestone Estates in Spencer.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice (Roger) McFrederick of Elyria and Lois Cano of Huron; son, Homer (Rita) Sooy of Homerville; four grandchildren, Greg McFrederick, Mike (Renee) McFrederick, Ryan (Brenda), and Brad (Christina) Sooy; and five great-grandchildren, Mat and Benjamin McFrederick; John, Summer, and Hannah Sooy

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, sisters, Jessie Piper and Olive Miller; brothers, Joe and Ed McConnell; and son-in-law, Richard Cano.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 4 until 7 P.M., at the Parker Funeral Home, 202 E. Main St., Spencer (330-648-2180). Funeral service will be held Thursday, December 13, 2012, 11 A.M., at the Spencer United Methodist Church, 201 E. Main St., Spencer. Reverend Dr. Tim Morrison will officiate. Burial will follow at Spencer Cemetery.
