Lucky socks carry Cloverleaf girls to title

BARBERTON — Don’t mess with the Christmas socks.

The Cloverleaf girls basketball team found its lucky charm Saturday and used the mojo to beat Coventry 50-44 and win the Lady Magics Holiday Classic.

All 10 players for the Colts (4-5), who won the event for the second straight year, wore different holiday-themed socks. They ranged in colors from black, blue, red and green, some were striped and many featured cartoons of snowmen or Santa Claus.

Sophomore Lauren Gokey had a big game against the Comets (4-5) with eight points 12 rebounds, two assists and three steals, while junior Jessie Lindemeyer added a team-high nine points, three rebounds and three assists.

Emily Civittolo (8 points) joined Gokey on the all-tournament team.

Wooster 64, Highland 62

GRANGER TWP. — Anna Rose Wiencek’s huge game of 22 points, seven rebounds and seven steals went for naught as the Hornets (6-3) couldn’t overcome the Generals in this non-league affair. AnnMarie Kirchner added 20 points for Highland, which was outscored 27-12 in the third quarter and made a furious comeback in the closing moments thanks to three straight Wiencek 3-pointers.

Lakewood 66, Brunswick 54

LAKEWOOD — Center Gabrielle Bulic (16 points), forward Bri Moss (13) and guard Courtney Laudato (12) scored in double figures for the Blue Devils (4-5) in this non-conference defeat to the Rangers (7-1), who hit nine
3-pointers.

Smithville 63, Black River 12

SMITHVILLE — Guard Savanna Slone had six points and two assists for the Pirates (2-8) in this non-conference loss to the Smithies (9-0).
