MEDINA — Genesis wasn’t supposed to arrive until Jan. 6, but her debut on New Year’s Day seemed fitting.

“I think it’s ironic Genesis was the first baby,” said Starr Anthony, who gave birth to 5-pound, 4-ounce Genesis La’Rae Anthony at 11:56 a.m. Tuesday at Medina Hospital following 12 hours of labor.

Mom and baby are both doing fine.

Anthony, 19, said she realized Genesis might make an early appearance when she felt uncomfortable during a New Year’s Eve program at her church and came home.

“I got home and I was like, this is too much, we have to go to the hospital,” she said as Genesis tried to shake off one of her pink mittens.

Anthony paused, trying to put the mitten back on, but Genesis apparently wanted her hand free so she could use it to grab her polka-dot sleeper and suck on it.

Not only was Genesis the first baby of the year born in Medina, she also is Anthony first child.

Anthony said a friend suggested the name Genesis months ago when she learned she was carrying a girl.

“I just liked the name a lot. We’ve been calling her Genesis all along,” she said.

Anthony, a lifelong Medina resident, said she expects to relax at home for a while and enjoy visits from friends and family over the next few weeks.
