New Medina County sheriff says, ‘Now it’s my call’

MEDINA — When Medina County’s new Sheriff Tom Miller told his son he had to swear in his deputies and other staff members on his first day on the job, Miller’s adult son had one thing to say.

“They still do that? That’s like something from the Old West.”

Miller agreed.

“It really is,” he said.

Miller, 62, of Brunswick, was elected to the position Nov. 6 and took office Monday, replacing Neil Hassinger, 74, of Wadsworth, who retired.

Miller, a Republican, won 72.7 percent of the votes, easily defeating Democrat John Detchon, 68, of Montville Township.

Miller, who was the chief deputy of the Sheriff’s Office at the time of his election, said his first day was similar to how it was with his previous position.

“Before, I would advise the sheriff, but it was always his call in the end,” he said. “Now it’s my call, so the burden’s a bit heavier.”

The main thing that was different, he said, was swearing in all the full-time employees. Since midnight Sunday, he has sworn in more than 50 people — from deputies and dispatchers to secretaries and sheriff’s sale appraisers.

“I also took the time to review the administrative structure, too, which is something I promised during my campaign,” he said.

Aside from that, he said his day was largely routine. He said he didn’t expect day-to-day operations to vary much from before.

“It’s not so different,” he said. “But my name’s on everything now, though.”

Miller has been a Sheriff’s Office employee since 1997.

As chief deputy, he earned $80,000 annually. As sheriff, he will be paid $84,065.
