Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao will undergo surgery Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic and will be out six to eight more weeks, the team announced Wednesday in a press release.

Varejao was originally diagnosed with a bruised right knee after banging it Dec. 18 vs. Toronto. His status had been listed as “day-to-day” for the 10 games he had missed heading into a Wednesday game against Atlanta.

The 6-foot-11, 260-pound center has now suffered a serious injury each of the last three seasons. Two years ago, he tore a tendon in his ankle. Last season, he suffered a season-ending wrist injury.

In regards to his most recent injury, a second opinion was recently obtained from Dr. J. Richard Steadman of The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. It confirmed Cavs team physician Dr. Richard Parker’s recommendation for surgery, which will be done at the Cleveland Clinic.

Varejao is averaging 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds for the season.
