Sharon Twp. man faces federal child porn charges

SHARON TWP. — A 47-year-old township man was arrested Wednesday on federal charges of distributing child pornography.

Richard J. Miezin, of 5490 Boneta Road, was taken into FBI custody at about 3:30 p.m. and awaits arraignment, according to the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.

A federal indictment charges that Miezin “knowingly distributed, by computer, numerous computer files that contained visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” from April 2010 to February 2011, according to an FBI spokesperson.

Miezin also is charged with “knowingly and willfully making false material statements and representations to the Federal Bureau of Investigation during their investigation,” according to the spokesperson.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol M. Skutnik.

Medina County Sheriff Tom Miller said Miezin’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Akron office of the FBI’s Crimes Against Children Task Force.

“There was a search warrant conducted some time ago where we looked through his computer,” Miller said Wednesday, “but he was arrested this afternoon.”

He said the partnership with the task force was just formalized a couple of days ago, but they’ve been working together for a few months.

Detective Samo Mernik was the lead investigator, Miller said.

Mernik was unavailable for comment Wednesday.

“We want to do everything we can to protect the children of this county,” Miller said. “We’re going to continue to work diligently to do as much as we can to weed these activities out of our community.”
