Patriot moms group offers opportunities to support military troops

BRUNSWICK — Ohio Patriot Moms is looking for some new recruits.

The group, a chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America, is based in Brunswick but hopes to enlist new members among military families from throughout Medina County.

Blue Star Mothers groups include mothers of active-duty military members and those who have been honorably discharged.

But you don’t have to be a mom to join.

The group includes family members of those serving or who have served. Family members who are not members can join as associate members and participate.

“We’re still in the planning stages for a lot of things, but we’re hoping to get more people to join us,” said Connie Munyan, a new member who serves as recording secretary for the organization.

The group is collecting cards and items to send to local troops serving overseas, and members are working with Brunswick Area Television to send items over.

“The BAT station is collecting items, and they’ve let us include our items with theirs until we’re able to ship things ourselves,” said Annette Hlavaty, president of the organization.

The group plans to send Easter cards to troops. Members also plan to send blank Mother’s and Father’s Day cards so troops can fill them out to send home to their families.

Leah Cheyney, who works for the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, said the group also is looking at a variety of other volunteer opportunities.
