MEDINA — Second Baptist Church will host its 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration Sunday.
The keynote speaker will be Candace Campbell Jackson, vice president and chief of staff at the University of Akron.
The Rev. Cornell Carter, senior pastor of Second Baptist, described Jackson as “a dynamic speaker.”
“She’ll talk about education and how it’s a foundation in achieving the dream and making us better, more productive citizens,” he said.
Carter said the service’s music will highlight local talent.
Gina Houston, Sherril “Bing” Rundle and the Fellowship Baptist Church Praise Dancers will perform under the direction of Jimmy D. Mitchell.
Money raised through sponsorships and from a freewill offering at the service will go toward a scholarship for a Medina High School student who best demonstrates the character of Martin Luther King Jr.
Carter said students can apply for the scholarship through the school, and it is awarded at a ceremony before graduation.
The service is sponsored by Second Baptist Church, Fellowship Baptist Church, Emerging Ministries of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, and the Medina Ministerial Association.
