Bertha Myers McCourt, 106, formerly of Spencer, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Kingston of Ashland, where she had resided the past seven years. She was born April 21, 1906, the daughter of Berton and Hattie Myers.
She was raised in the Clarksfield and Spencer areas, and attended secretarial school in Oberlin, although she always wanted to be a nurse. Bertha used her secretarial training working for Wells Insurance in Wellington for many years. She also was an Avon Lady while working for C.E. Ward in New London. She married John Howard McCourt on September 7, 1927, they celebrated 67 anniversaries.
Together they had three children, B. Lewis (Dolores) McCourt of Lima, Frances (Paul) Coe of Ocala, Florida, John Thomas (Marcia) McCourt of Ashland; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 31 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; son, Lewis; and daughter-in-law, Dolores.
Howard and Bertha retired in 1966 and spent their winters in Mt. Dora, Florida. Bertha was a very active member of Trinity Baptist Church in Ashland. She was known as Grandma McCourt to both young and old. She was always dressed to the nines. Her quick wit was matched by her quick foot on the gas pedal. She was known to all who loved her as “GO GRANNY”. Bertha has now gone to heaven leaving behind lots of wonderful memories for us to cherish.
We will miss her, but we can rest assured that she is at peace in heaven after spending 106 years on this earth.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 31, 2013, from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M., at the Parker Funeral Home, 202 E. Main St., Spencer (330-648-2180). Funeral service will begin at 2:30, following the visitation, with her son, Reverend John T. McCourt, officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Cemetery.
