Maddie Brandt has big night in gymnastics classic

MASSILLON — Cloverleaf junior Maddie Brandt put on a performance for the ages Wednesday at the North East Gymnastics Conference Winter Classic.

Brandt captured the league championship in all five events, topped by her Medina County-record score of 9.5 in the floor exercise.

The 2012 All-Gazette honoree also earned a season-high 36.1 in the all-around, an 8.9 on the vault, an 8.7 on the uneven parallel bars and a 9.0 on the balance beam. Brandt now owns eight NEGC titles in two seasons of competition.

Wadsworth sophomore Callie Almes also excelled in the meet hosted by Massillon Perry, finishing second in four events. She scored a career-high 9.3 on floor, along with a 34.425 in the all-around (34.425), an 8.475 on bars and an 8.8 on beam.

Grizzlies sophomore Charlotte Bates matched Brandt with five podium finishes, placing third on bars (8.35), fifth on beam (8.5), fifth all-around (33.625), sixth on floor (8.625) and sixth on vault (8.15).

Cloverleaf sophomore Cassie Grabowski added a fourth on vault (8.35), seventh in the all-around (32.225), eighth on beam (8.125) and ninth on floor (8.55).

Also placing in the top 10 were Colts sophomore Hanna Kotlarek, who was seventh on beam (8.2) and eighth on bars (7.45), and Cloverleaf junior Robyn Tresch, who was eighth on floor (8.575), ninth all-around (31.225) and 10th on beam (7.85).

The Winter Classic included the top five team finishers in the 10-school league. Wooster, GlenOak and Perry joined the two county squads.
