Nordonia survives scare from Hornets

MACEDONIA — The Highland boys basketball came within one point of the Suburban League upset of the season Friday.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, they lost all momentum and didn’t make enough free throws in a 55-54 loss to Nordonia.

The Knights (17-2, 12-0) clinched their second straight SL title after trailing 42-36 after three quarters.

“They’re a really good team and I know they haven’t lost (in the SL) in two years, but that’s probably the No. 1 seed in our district,” said Highland coach Michael Murphy, whose team fell to 11-8, 7-5. “I hate to lose, but it wasn’t all bad.”

According to Murphy, the turning point was when Tanner Houska (11 points) was called for a charging foul with Highland up six points. The Knights responded with a 3-pointer at the other end to fuel their comeback.

Hornets forward Brogan Scott had 21 points and 16 rebounds, but his effort wasn’t enough despite Highland holding SL leading scorer Chris Scott to five points.

Nick Piotrowski scored a team-high 17 points for Nordonia, which won its 26th straight league game.

“We’re making progress,” Murphy said.
