Era Robinson Thurston

Era Robinson Thurston, 97, of Medina, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Medina Village Retirement Center. Mrs. Thurston was born May 6, 1915 in Utica, New York to Pacifico and Carmella Alfonsi.

Era grew up in Niles, Ohio, and graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1933. After graduation, Era attended Spencerian Business College in Cleveland. She spent most of her adult years living and working in Cuyahoga County and Medina County.

After moving to Brunswick in 1956, Era was employed by the Medina Gazette, the Leader Post, the Akron Beacon Journal, and Brunswick City Schools. From 1966 to 1970, she worked for the Northeast Ohio Area Coordinating Agency (NOACA).

Era served with the Friends of the Brunswick Library, which was instrumental in passing a bond issue to build the Brunswick Library, now located on Center Road. The library opened in 1980. She was a long-time member of the Brunswick Garden Club. She enjoyed cooking, dried-flower arranging, traveling, and especially in her later years, reading.

Era is survived by her husband of 31 years, Arthur C. Thurston; son, Martin D. Robinson (Jane Norton); brother, William Alfonsi; sister-in-law, Ardell Jane Alfonsi; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 16 years, Marshall D. Robinson; her sister, Emma “Skip” Goff; and Veronica “Billie” Valeri, whom Era became acquainted with as a young girl and provided direction and guardianship.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the Medina Village Retirement Center and Dr. Yatish Goyal whose care and thoughtfulness kept Era comfortable during her last days.

Private graveside service was held at the Niles City Cemetery Chapel.
