Susan D. Simpson, 68, born in Warren, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013. The Spruce Creek Fly-in Community has lost one of it’s most beloved residents, admired for her love of life as demonstrated in every activity she pursued.
As you read the list of events and activities, realize that they don’t begin to tell the essence of Susan, the wonderful person. Kind, thoughtful, loving, caring, giving, joyous, optimistic, enthusiastic and profoundly sincere were some of her qualities. Every time she would see or talk to you, she would ask, “How are you?” She really wanted to know the answer! Susan’s lifelong passions embraced singing, dancing, flying aircraft, and teaching in a multitude of areas.
After graduation from Ohio University, Susan Holt met and married future United Airline pilot Curt Simpson and together they resided in New Jersey. There, she taught at the elementary level and then moved on to high-school speech, English, and drama. With a family started and relocation to Medina, Susan, became a stay-at-home mom. She turned her teaching skills to instructing future master musicians in piano lessons. Singing in a choir took her to Carnegie Hall to perform, a once-in-a-lifetime experience enjoyed by very few. She was a member of Coterie, a women’s study group in Medina.
In Port Orange, Florida, Susan co-founded the Creekettes dancing group that performs at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Her lovely alto voice also graced another Spruce Creek performing group, One Voice, an all-women’s choir. She shared her piano expertise at practices; she also entertained audiences by playing piano duets at various Daytona locations. Her teaching skills translated to her love of bridge. Susan excelled to the level of becoming a Certified Bridge Director with the American Contract Bridge League.
Heavily involved in the flying community, she held a commercial pilot’s license with instrument rating and loved flying her Beech Bonanza. She was a past president of the Spruce Creek Flying Club, a member of the “99s”, a member of Women of Wings and the Grasshoppers.
The main lesson that Susan’s life taught to all who knew her was how to survive and thrive through extreme adversity…always wearing a smile. In every endeavor, she demonstrated that she cared more about others than herself.
She is survived by her husband, Curt; her father, Edward Holt and his companion, Nita Myers; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Donna Holt; her son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Melissa Simpson; her daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Jeremy Lees; and adored granddaughter, Ella.
A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Port Orange Presbyterian Church, 4662 South Clyde Morris Blvd, Port Orange.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Association for the Research of Childhood Cancer, Memorials and Donations, P.O. Box 251 Buffalo, NY 14225-0251. www.arocc.org
