Devils diver, Ty Talley, is All-Ohio again

CANTON — For the second straight season, Ty Talley is an All-Ohioan.

The Brunswick diver took eighth in the 1-meter event at the Division I state meet held Saturday at Canton McKinley’s C.T. Branin Natatorium.

A week after the senior’s runner-up performance at the Cleveland District, Talley recorded a score of 446.10. Nordonia’s Stephen Romanik won with 557.15.

Talley, who placed 13th at the meet a year ago, joined Branden Toro (2005-06) as the only two-time All-Ohio divers in school history.

Talley wasn’t alone on the award stand locally in D-I, as Medina resident Shannon Cahalan also found her way there.

Cahalan, a sophomore at Firestone High School, swam a leg on the Falcon’s 400-yard freestyle relay that took fifth in 3:32.31. She had split times of 25.72 and 28.74.

Brunswick’s Lizzy Gehlmann and Medina’s Carolyn Yurkoski failed to qualify for the finals Saturday after placing 19th in their respective preliminary races.

Gehlmann clocked 53.69 in her 100 free prelim on Friday, while Yurkoski finished her 50 free heat in 24.76.

In D-II, Walsh Jesuit’s Joey Reilman walked away with a host of medals as the Medina native placed in two individual events as well as leading one relay to a championship final.

The sophomore placed fourth in the the 200 free (1:42.27) and 100 backstroke (50.83), along with pacing the Warrior’s 200 medley unit to eighth in 1:38.87.

He also swam on a 400 free relay team that was ninth after racing in the consolation finals.
