Picketing Medina resident arrested in Strongsville

From staff and wire reports

STRONGSVILLE — A picketing Strongsville middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday morning after police said he blocked the entrance to Center Middle School.

Ian Steffen, 37, of 910 Wadsworth Road, Medina, was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. The case will be heard in Berea Municipal Court.

Steffen, who is a science teacher, “continued to attempt to impede traffic in the area of Center Middle School after receiving repeated audible direction from a uniformed officer to clear the driveway,” according to a police report.

Strongsville teachers went on strike Monday after the school district and the teachers union failed to reach agreements over salary and working conditions.

The strike entered its third day Wednesday and includes almost 400 teachers. Classes are being taught by substitutes in the district of about 6,300 students.

Students have joined teachers on the picket line. About two dozen Strongsville students, some holding signs, demonstrated outside the board of education office Tuesday night.

Some of the students said they were protesting an announcement by the high school principal warning them about the content of postings on social media sites about the strike.
