Boys basketball: Geschke, Wheeler top players in county

COLUMBUS — The top two players in Medina County earned accolades when the Division I and II All-Ohio boys basketball teams were released Monday by the Associated Press.

Medina senior Billy Geschke and Brunswick senior Kyle Wheeler were special mention in Division I after compiling high-scoring seasons in the deep Northeast Ohio Conference.

Geschke, a 6-foot-1 guard, led the NOC with a 22.1 scoring average. It marks the second straight year the Goshen (Ind.) recruit has received All-Ohio honors after being named honorable mention as a junior.

Meanwhile, the 6-5 Wheeler put the Blue Devils on his back during the second half of the season to finish with a 16.3 scoring average, including 59 combined points in upset wins over Shaker Heights, Garfield Heights and Mentor.

Elsewhere around The Gazette’s 38-school coverage area, Green center Dan Fanelly was a first-team selection after being named the Northeast Inland District Player of the Year. Shaker Heights center Esa Ahmad, Brush forward Brandon Dawson and former Medina resident Joshua Williams, now a point guard for Barberton, were second team.

Shaker Heights’ Kash Blackwell, Elyria’s Kody Bender, Hudson’s Zack Brandy and Nordonia’s Chris Scott joined Geschke and Wheeler on the special mention unit, while Mentor’s Jeff Foreman, Garfield Heights’ Richard Parker, Shaker Heights’ Rosel Hurley, North Royalton’s Omari Spellman, Twinsburg’s A.J. Edwards and Stow’s Matt Beech were honorable mention.

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior Bob Peters, the son of Medina County Sports Hall of Famer Jay Peters, was a second-team choice in D-II.
