Trash pickup delayed again; Republic strike continues

CARLISLE TWP. — Republic Waste workers remained on strike for a second day this morning, pushing back trash collection by another day.

Dave Kidder, area marketing manager for Republic, said the company is bringing in workers from out of state and those workers will begin making the rounds in Lorain, Medina and western Cuyahoga counties on Wednesday. But those pickups will be for trash only. Recycling and yard waste won’t be collected this week.

Republic hopes to have all of this week’s trash collected by Sunday, he said. He also warned that the workers from out of the area won’t move as fast as those who normally collect the garbage.

“They won’t know where they’re going other than with a map,” he said. “It’s going to be slow.”

Teamsters Local 20, which represents workers at Republic’s Lorain County operations, refused to cross a picket line set up outside the company’s Butternut Ridge Road facility by striking teamsters from the Youngstown area, on Monday.

Kidder said he doesn’t know when the sympathy strike will end.

“We’re going to plan for the worst and hope for the best,” he said.
