LODI — Police arrested a Wooster teenager on felony theft charges after viewing surveillance tape showing him using credit cards they believe were stolen at Highland Garden Apartments.
Taylor Lautenschlager, 19, was charged with two counts of theft of a credit card after he was arrested around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Lodi Police Chief Keith Keough said two people reported credit cards were stolen from their vehicles at the Highland Garden Apartments on Thursday. In both cases, the vehicles were unlocked.
Keough said one of the cards was used to purchase a carton of cigarettes from a Lodi convenience store.
Officers reviewed surveillance tapes from the store and were able to get a good picture of a suspect, he said. Police spotted Lautenschlager later that afternoon near a gas station on Bank Street.
“We showed him the photograph and said, ‘Who’s this,’ and he said, ‘It’s me,’ “ Keough said.
He said police believe Lautenschlager was staying with friends on Sunset Drive in Lodi.
Police are investigating other break-ins in the area to determine whether Lautenschlager may have been involved. Keough said he expects additional charges will be filed against Lautenschlager.
The chief said police believe the teen attempted to gain entry to cars on Oak Court, Grove Street, Janice Street, North Academy Street, Harris Street, Archer Street, Pembroke Green and Bank Street on April 16.
After Lautenschlager’s arrest, Keough said police recovered a television, which was returned to its owner. He said police also found a GPS unit they believe Lautenschlager took from a vehicle at Highland Garden.
“If you believe you had something taken from your car between Tuesday and Wednesday, we want you to report it,” Keough said.
