Nico is the newest addition to the Brunswick Police Department. He will be assisting Officer Mark Luciano in drug arrests and search tasks. Brunswick police’s K-9 Blackjack officially retired Monday, and a 1½-year-old replacement has stepped up to take his place. Nico, a 65-pound Belgian Malinois, has been certified by the state to perform patrol and narcotics work. He already is on the job with his handler, Officer Mark Luciano. Nico was born in Holland and was transported to Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania where he and Luciano completed training. Luciano also owns and handles Blackjack, who is 9½ years old. He said he’ll miss working with him. “He’s been a good partner for the last five years,” Luciano said. He said his children were excited to have Blackjack home during the day to play. “He’s going to take on the role of house dog,” Luciano said.
