BEREA – Barkevious Mingo’s whirlwind 24 hours continued this afternoon as he was introduced to the Northeast Ohio media inside the fieldhouse at team headquarters.
Mingo, drafted No. 6 Thursday night, was joined by coach Rob Chudzinski to hold up the No. 51 jersey. The reason for the number: It’s close to the 49 he wore at LSU.
Mingo was joined at the news conference by his mom, Barbara, and girlfriend, Lauren.
“It’s been crazy. I can’t put it into words,” Mingo said of his week. “I’m blessed and thrilled to be here.”
Mingo was in New York for the draft, then flew to Cleveland. He was asked how he plans to live up to the No. 6 pick.
“Just come out here ready to work,” he said.
That was a theme. When asked what separates him from Vernon Gholston, who played at Ohio State, was the sixth pick of the Jets and became one of the all-time draft busts, he had a quick answer.
“Work ethic,” he said.
Mingo looked skinny with narrow shoulders in his gray suit. He said he weighs 237 pounds and disagreed with the experts who said he must add 20 pounds of muscle.
“I think I can play at this weight,” he said.
