The long-awaited reconstruction of West Smith Road begins Monday. The $1.9 million project is part of a multiyear upgrade of roads serving the industrial area in Medina’s southwest side.
The initial project will widen and replace about a half-mile of West Smith Road from Lake Road to the double railroad crossing near 850 W. Smith Road — midway between Lake and State roads.
In addition to the pavement replacement, new storm sewers and water lines will also be installed.
During the seven months of construction, traffic will be restricted to one westbound lane.
City Engineer Patrick Patton stressed that the city is paying for all the work.
“Individual property owners will not be assessed for any of the costs for these improvements,” he said.
“The cost of the project is being shared by the city of Medina and the state of Ohio,” which contributed two grants totaling $570,000.
Patton said an open house is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall to answer questions from residents and business owners affected by the project.
While saying he expects access to homes and businesses to be maintained, Patton warned that “day-to-day interruptions to traffic movement must be expected.”
“There may be times, for instance, when a construction vehicle or piece of equipment will block the street entirely for several minutes.”
Patton said the project is needed because of the poor condition of the road, which carries heavy truck traffic to many manufacturing plants.
The new pavement will be 12 inches of concrete with 6-inch curbs.
In addition to replacing the pavement, the road will be widened to provide a center left-turn lane just east of the railroad tracks to Lake Road.
A new 12-inch water main also will be installed along the length of the project.
Construction is expected to be finished by December, but Patton said some landscaping and cleanup may wait until spring — depending on the weather.
The prime contractor is the lowest bidder on the project, Fabrizi Trucking and Paving Co., of Liverpool Township.
The Smith project is one of several road reconstructions aimed at improving access to businesses and industries on the city’s southwest side.
Pavement was replaced on Lake Road between Lafayette Road and the city limits last fall, and an extension of Commerce Drive, from Branch Road to state Route 18, opened last summer.
A second phase of the West Smith project, scheduled for 2014, will continue east another half-mile to about 400 feet past State Road.
