Tennis: Colts’ Dunbar, Highland pair advance easily

MEDINA — Cloverleaf junior Jacob Dunbar is now a three-time sectional champion.

No. 1 seed Dunbar completed his domination of the Medina Division I Sectional on Saturday with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over No. 2 seed Aaron Sandberg of Walsh Jesuit.

Dunbar — also a three-time Suburban League first singles champion and MVP — only lost one game in five matches over three days on the courts at Medina High.

All four seeds held true at the tournament as No. 3 Steven Boslet of Hudson knocked off No. 4 Matt Miles of Walsh Jesuit 6-3, 6-2 in the other placement match.

All four players, along with the top four doubles teams, will continue their tournament quests Thursday morning at the Oberlin College District.

Six of the 16 district qualifiers in each bracket will move on to the state tournament in Columbus, which takes place on May 30 and June 1.

Highland senior Steve Smykal and junior Michael Hutchings also won their final sectional match in impressive fashion, hammering Revere’s Mike Wolowiecki and Dominic Polifrone 6-0, 6-2 in the third-place contest.

The duos from the Hornets and Minutemen were both unseeded, but went 4-1 and disposed of the No. 4 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, earlier in the week.

Smykal and Hutchings will make their district debuts at Oberlin, where they must win their first match, along with one of their next two to qualify for state.

In what turned into a Copley intrasquad doubles final, No. 1 seeds Andrew Ong and Jarad Pennington beat Austin and Gavin Aten 6-1, 6-4.

Dunbar is the only Medina County player to qualify for state in the last two seasons, advancing in the singles draw in 2011 and 2012.
