Grand jury hears accused student’s case

MEDINA — A University of Akron football player accused of robbing a Brunswick tobacco products shop at gunpoint was bound over to a Medina County grand jury following a hearing in Medina Municipal Court on Tuesday afternoon.

A grand jury met Wednesday, but will not report until Friday.

Seth Cunningham

Seth Cunningham, 21, of 3175 Central Park Lane, Montville Township, was arrested May 13 on a charge of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.

Police said Cunningham entered the 24-hour Twilight Boutique, 1789 Pearl Road, Brunswick, just after midnight May 13 with a 9mm handgun and took a $447 water pipe from a display case and fled.

Officers arrested Cunningham shortly afterward.

He has no previous record in Medina or Summit County municipal or common pleas courts.

A university spokesman said Cunningham was suspended from the football team pending the case because getting arrested is a violation of the university’s code of conduct for student athletes.

If he is convicted, he will not be permitted to play for the Akron Zips.
