BRUNSWICK — On Friday, Brunswick police arrested two city men, who were traveling in the same car, on OVI charges following a crash on Hickory Ridge Avenue.
Police said Robby M. Smoot, 33, of 1290 Pearl Road, Apt. 70, was driving a red Pontiac when he struck another vehicle from behind at 10:46 p.m. Friday.
Witnesses said the Smoot put the car in reverse and backed away from the crash. Smoot then put the car in park and he and his passenger, David J. Gircsis, 34, of 2055 Gaylann Drive got out of the car and traded places. Gircsis then drove the car into a nearby parking lot.
When police arrived, the two men were in the backseat of the car, which had front-end damage.
The police report said Smoot admitted he was driving when the pair struck the vehicle and then traded places. Field sobriety tests were administered to both men and both were charged with operating a vehicle while impaired.
Smoot also was charged with possession of drug abuse instruments, driving under suspension, no operator license and failure to assure a clear distance ahead. He submitted a blood alcohol sample of 0.108. Gircsis also was charged with speeding, and OVI refusal with a prior conviction in the last 20 years.
