Patrol: Teen’s Jeep runs light, hits motorcyclist

MONTVILLE TWP. — A Fairlawn man was injured when a Jeep Liberty went through a red light and hit his motorcycle Wednesday night at Interstate 71 and state Route 18, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Lt. Bill Haymaker, commander of the Medina post of the patrol, said a 2006 tan Jeep Liberty driven by Matthew Sarko, 16, of Avon Lake, was turning left from the exit ramp off I-71 onto state Route 18 west at 10:14 p.m. Sarko went through a red light and hit a 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling east on Route 18, Haymaker said.

The motorcyclist, Carmen Cassella, 56, of Fairlawn, was taken to Medina Hospital and then transferred by emergency helicopter to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center, the lieutenant said.

Cassella was listed in good condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Sarko was cited with failure to yield and driving outside restrictions, because he was driving with four other teenage passengers, Haymaker said.
