Complaint filed about raccoons

BRUNSWICK — Police received a complaint filed at the station Thursday from James Slane, 1602 Scarborough Drive, about his backyard neighbor, Lou Barta, 1609 Wiltshire Drive, concerning raccoons.

Slane told police that Barta has been feeding raccoons for the past 15 to 20 years and that the animals have been a nuisance and posed health and safety concerns. Slane said several neighbors have asked Barta to stop feeding the raccoons.

The report said police visited Barta at home and told him the neighbors had complained about the raccoons.

According to the report, Barta told police he had stopped feeding them and would not feed them again. He added that he only feeds birds now and limits the food so he won’t draw raccoons.

Dan McMillen of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, said there is no state law that addresses feeding wildlife but that raccoons can pose a danger if handled and they are carriers of various diseases including, possibly, rabies.

McMillen said animals like raccoons are best left wild.
