Brunswick schools shift leadership positions

In a series of administrative changes, Brunswick students and staff will see some new and some familiar faces in leadership positions when they head back to school this fall.

Some staff members have moved up to new leadership roles, while other positions were filled through an interview process, Superintendent Michael Mayell said.

“A lot of people are taking on more responsibility — you want them to move forward in their career within the district,” Mayell said. “We also have people from other districts with fresh ideas.”

Tracy Wheeler, principal of Brunswick High School will be stepping up to fill the assistant superintendent post now held by Joelle Magyar, who is leaving the district for a position in the Mayfield City School District.

Stepping in to fill Wheeler’s spot is high school Assistant Principal Mike Draves. Lee Ann Petry, has been asked to serve as assistant principal under Draves. Petry served as a math teacher at Edwards Middle School in 1998 and 1999. He has served most recently as co-principal at Keystone Middle School in LaGrange.

Carol Yost, principal of Visintainer Middle School and Kent Morgan, principal at Edwards Middle School, will both move to the central office where they have been asked to serve as assistant directors for the Ohio Teacher’s Evaluation System. Morgan and Yost will help oversee teacher evaluations throughout the district and take on other central office duties.

Edwards Assistant Principal Heidi Armentrout has been promoted to serve as principal at the school. At Visintainer, Brian Sharosky has been hired as principal.

Sharosky has worked in the Cleveland Heights and University Heights District where he served as principal at Roxboro and Monticello Middle schools.

In the elementary schools, two familiar faces will replace retiring principals Mary Ann Melvin at Hickory Ridge and Judith Galo and Memorial Elementary. Marisa Bavaro, former Brunswick High School assistant principal, will transfer to Hickory Ridge to serve as Principal and Katie Mann, a teacher at Kidder Elementary since 1999, will serve as principal at Memorial.

Mayell said the slate of new administrators will be presented to the Brunswick Board of Education for a vote on Monday night.
