Medina police capture fugitive

MEDINA — A man who eluded Lodi police Friday was arrested Sunday in Medina.

Medina police captured Michael Basford, 26, at 560 Birch Hill Drive, Apt. B2, after Lodi police called with a tip that he was believed to be staying there.

Police have been on the lookout for Basford since he was indicted in April by a Medina County grand jury on a felony charge of breaking and entering.

Basford is accused of breaking into an apartment on Sunset Drive, in Lodi, on March 25, and attacking the resident. Basford claimed the man owed him money.

On Friday, Lodi police got an anonymous tip that Basford was at the Drug Mart in Lodi, 661 Wooster St. But he fled when he spotted a police car and ran into nearby woods.

Police continued to search for him, reposted his picture on its Facebook page and reached out to local media.

Medina Police Sgt. Ed Kinney said he received a call from Lodi police with the tip about Basford.

Kinney said he and Officers Al Roland and Todd Grice went to the apartment in the early afternoon and knocked on the door. They heard movement inside but nobody answered. They set up a surveillance perimeter around the building and waited.

They didn’t have to wait long.

A tan sedan pulled up to the apartment around 1 p.m., Kinney said, and Basford came out of the building and tried to run for the car.

“He was quickly taken into custody,” Kinney said. “He didn’t really have an opportunity to do anything, we were on top of him pretty fast.”

No charges were filed against the driver of the sedan. Kinney said the man did not know that he was driving a would-be getaway car.

Basford is being held in Medina County Jail on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment before Medina County Common Pleas Court Judge Christopher Collier at 9 a.m.

Basford was convicted in the same court on felony charges of attempted drug trafficking in 2005, felony possession of cocaine in 2007 and felony possession of oxycodone in 2010.

In Medina Municipal Court, he was convicted of domestic violence in 2006, assault in 2009, drug abuse and driving under suspension in 2010 and OVI in 2003.

In Wadsworth Municipal Court he was convicted on two charges of driving under suspension and one count of drug abuse, all in 2007.
