The art of the shear

MEDINA — At a sheep shearing demonstration Friday at the Medina County Fair, George Meuhlheim shaved a sheep in less than five minutes.

All the while the Bellville resident talked about the skill of shearing sheep.

“The goal everyone shoots for is shaving three (sheep) in six minutes,” he said.

Meuhlheim, a farmer who applies his skill throughout Ohio as seasonal help, said his speed depends on how fast he can handle the sheep and pull the wool away.

Once, at a farm in New Zealand, he and six other men were able to shear 2,500 sheep, he said.

Typically, he said, he shears between 10 and 50 sheep at farms across the state.

In addition to his shearing skill, he also has three dogs, Roy, Hailey and Ben, who herd the sheep. On Friday, Meuhlheim also showed off his dogs’ herding skills.

“The herding is fun to watch,” he said. “People enjoy watching my dogs round up the sheep.”

Today at the fair, Meuhlheim will present a sheep-shearing demonstration at 3 p.m. and a herding demonstration at 5 p.m. Both demonstrations will be at the Pepsi building.
