Golf: Hornets rule at tournament

NORTON — The names may change, but the end result stays the same.

Spearheaded by junior Chloe McKinzie’s medalist-winning 72 Monday, the Highland girls golf team dominated at the Suburban League Preseason Tournament at Barberton Brookside Country Club.

The Hornets compiled a 20-over-par 308 to defeat longtime league rival Green by 21 strokes. Freshman Madison Butler carded a 76, while seniors Karly Alexander (79) and Rachel Horvath (81) also scored as Highland won the event for the fourth straight season.

Cloverleaf (388) secured its best score in two years and finished fifth behind the strength of Meredith Illig’s 86 and Sierra Pickett’s 87.

Second-team All-Ohioan Alice Ho of Wadsworth finished one stroke behind McKinzie in the individual race.

SILVER LAKE — Junior Evan Schreck shot a 6-over 78 as Medina (326) finished sixth and 15 strokes behind champion Walsh Jesuit at this 21-team event. Joe Kerrigan (81), Grant Morgan (84) and Andrew DeLaat (84) also scored at Silver Lake Country Club.

The Pines Invitational

GREEN TWP. — Greg Briggs (86), Tim Harrell (88) and Brady Kotlarek (89) broke 90 as Cloverleaf (352) finished fourth at this 14-team event hosted by par-72 The Pines Golf Club. Dalton won with a 342. Black River (484) was paced by Tanner Hawley’s 107.

North Royalton JV Tournament

HINCKLEY TWP. — Medina’s Nate Schollaert won his second tournament of the season with a 3-over-par 75 at Hinckley Hills Golf Course, while Tyler Grabowski added a 78 as the Bees clobbered the field by 34 strokes with a 323. The score was three strokes lower than the varsity team compiled at Silver Lake Country Club.
