Jim Curtice, whose genuine interest in people and ability as a salesman made him “Medina’s Favorite Milkman,” died peacefully at home Wednesday, August 14, 2013, of natural causes. He was 96. James Franklin Curtice was born September 3, 1916, to Leon and Elsie (nee Sanders) Curtice, in Elyria.
When he was four, the family moved to a farm on Lafayette Road in Medina, where he grew up. He started working for Elm Farm Dairy in 1938, initially delivering milk by horse and wagon, and, starting in 1958, by truck. He delivered milk until 1978. After the dairy closed, he spent the next 10 years as a supervisor for Stop ‘n Go stores, retiring at 72.
He enjoyed raising Shetland ponies with his three daughters, and growing his annual vegetable garden. He loved golf and was a long-standing member of the Skyland Men’s Golf League. A watercolor of him with his horse and wagon, painted by Frederick C. Graff of Medina, was presented at his 90th birthday celebration, held at Elm Farm Dairy. It now hangs in the Medina County District Library.
Mr. Curtice is survived by his daughters, Deanne Curtice Brewster of Prescott Arizona and Linda Curtice (Lonnie) Frost of Medina; grandchildren, Kathy (Michael) Gallucci and Brad Auker; and great grandchildren, Alicia, Kaitlin, and Michael Gallucci, Brittney and Briana Auker, all of Medina.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Helen (nee Rollins) Curtice; and daughter, Kathleen Joy Curtice.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, August 19, 2013, at 11 A.M., at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina. Chaplain Don Verdell will officiate. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 3 to 6 P.M., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions, in his memory, to Hospice of Medina County, 5075 Windfall Road, Medina, OH 44256, or your favorite charity.
