SPENCER — Mayor Tom Ramey lost his battle with cancer Friday.
Ramey, 80, died at HMC Hospice of Medina at 2:32 p.m., said his niece and village Fiscal Officer Sheri Ramey.
Ramey served as mayor for 12 years and several terms on Village Council before that. He was well known for spearheading a campaign that brought Firestone Park to the village, and was a member of the village’s volunteer Fire Department.
“He just loved the Village of Spencer and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to make it a great place to live,” Sheri Ramey said. “It was his baby.”
Sheri Ramey said her uncle began to feel ill around the Fourth of July, and had been in and out of the hospital with an aggressive form of the illness that attacked his liver, lungs and bones.
Ramey retired from Ohio Edison, where he worked in management, after more than 30 years.
He leaves two sons, Donald of Polk and Edward of Lodi, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife Armelis died in April and a daughter, Billie Joe Schuck, died a few years ago, Ramey said.
Council President Dan DeRossett has been serving as interim mayor during Ramey’s illness, but a new mayor will need to be elected to serve out the two years remaining on Ramey’s term. Sheri Ramey said anyone interested will have 10 days from Friday to file for the November ballot.
Services are pending at Parker Funeral Home in Spencer, run by Ramey’s daughter-in-law, Patty Ramey, wife of Edward.
