Problems increase cost, delays Medina Rec field house opening

Replacing the floor of the field house at the Medina Community Recreation Center will be delayed about a month after construction workers ran into problems.

The cost of the project also is going up — from $182,857 to $232,770.

Jon Burkhart, director of business affairs for Medina Schools, said the field house, which features four full basketball courts, may not reopen until mid-October.

The field house has been closed since July 22 and was scheduled to reopen by the beginning of September.

Burkhart said the polyurethane floor needed to be replaced because it had started to deteriorate. The field house has been in used since the recreation center opened in 2003.

Burkhart said the floor was supposed to last more than 10 years.

“There was some deficiency in the material that was used,” Burkhart said. The contractor who did the initial project is now out of business.”

The new floor will have a 10-year warranty and should last 20 years, Burkhart said.

Because the city leases the recreation center, which is owned by Medina Schools, City Council and the school board had to approve the repairs and have agreed to split the cost.

In July, the school board and Council approved awarding the contract to Dynamic Sports Construction to replace the flooring at a cost of $182,857.

But when Dynamic Sports construction workers ripped out the floor, they found it was much more uneven than they thought. The company told the district it would cost an extra $84,318, but city and district officials were able to negotiate a reduced amount.

Recreation Center Director Mike Wright described the negotiation as an “uphill battle” during a Council meeting.

“I called the president of Dynamic personally,” he said.

The city and the district will split an additional cost of $49,913.

The school board approved the change order in the contract to replace the floor at its Monday meeting. Council signed off on the increased spending at a special meeting Tuesday.

Kurt Gehring, recreation center supervisor, said the delay is creating uncertainty in program scheduling for the field house.

Gehring said the programs scheduled for the field house next month — including volleyball camps, gym classes and adult basketball leagues — have been rescheduled or cancelled.

While the field house is closed, the recreation center’s web site shows a list of public outdoor basketball courts at local parks.
