MEDINA — Former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel will share some of the secrets of his success this fall at the University of Akron.
But unlike most college courses, anyone can attend. The cost of the course is $499.
Those attending course, “General Principles of Coaching,” won’t have to go to Akron. The lectures will be transmitted live to five other University of Akron campuses, including the Medina County University Center, 6300 Technology Lane, Medina, and the Midpoint Campus Center, 50 Pearl Road, Brunswick.
Tressel spent 10 years as coach of the Buckeyes, winning a national title in 2002. He was hired as UA’s vice president for student success in May 2012 after being forced to resign at Ohio State in 2011 after the NCAA penalized the University for not revealing that several players had traded sports memorabilia for cash and tattoos.
The penalty keeps Tressel from coaching until December 2016.
Tressel will team-teach the course with former Walsh University and UA football coach Jim Dennison.
Dennison retired last year from coaching and as Associate Athletic Director at Walsh University. He spent 13 years at the University of Akron as head coach, 1973-85, where he is holds the school’s best coaching record.
Victor Pinheiro, head of the university’s sports science and wellness department, said many high school coaches in the area and across the nation have shown interest in enrolling in the class.
“There are many high school coaches who need to advance their education, and accumulate more credits to an advanced degree,” Pinheiro said. “The principles taught in this class will help them become more productive, more effective and more confident.”
Although the class is open to undergraduate and graduate students, and members of the public who want to advance their skills, the three-credit course is a requirement for the university’s about 1,500 undergraduates and graduate students in the department of Sport Science and Wellness Education in the university’s College of Education at UA.
The course also is offered at the graduate level for $800 more.
Classes will be held Wednesdays, 6:40 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. beginning Wednesday. The final exam will be Dec. 11.

Tenative guest speakers for the course include several University of Akron coaches, including basketball coaches Keith Dambrot and Jodi Kest, football coach Terry Bowden and soccer coach Jared Embick, and New York Giants scout Steve Devine and Mount Union athletic director and former head football coach Larry Kehres.
This won’t be the first time Tressel and Dennison have worked together. Dennison was the head football coach at the University of Akron when Jim Tressel applied for his first coaching job as an assistant in 1974.
“He gave me my first opportunity to coach, and he provided guidance that has lasted me a lifetime,” Tressel said.
Tressel went on to coach at Ohio’s Miami University, Syracuse University, Ohio State and Youngstown State before taking over the post of head coach at Ohio State in 2002.
