Seville college runner wins Labor Day 5k

A Seville man home from college for the Labor Day holiday won this year’s 5K Run for the Trails.

Bret Nehrenz, 22, a senior cross-country and track-and-field athlete at Capital University in Columbus, finished first overall with a time of 17 minutes, 51 seconds.

Nehrenz said he signed up for the race Monday morning on a whim.

“I was home for the weekend from college and I figured my dad was going to run it anyway, and he egged me on a bit,” Nehrenz said. “I figured, OK, I’m home so might as well do it.”

Nehrenz, who will graduate this winter and already has completed his four years of eligibility as a college athlete, said he was satisfied with his performance.

“It’s a decent time,” he said. “I was wanting a little faster, but I’m a little out of shape.”

Sadie Smith, 41, of Ashland, was the first-place female finisher with a time of 20:50. Her husband, Brad Smith, 42, finished first in the male master’s division with a time of 18:53.

Kim Kessler, 45, of Richfield, was first in the female master’s division with a time of 22:02.

A total of 202 runners, ranging in age from 6 to 73, finished the race, which raises money to promote, build and extend hiking and biking trails in the village.

Chairman Dennis Gordon said participants came from 42 different communities in the region and two competitors came from Maryland and New Jersey.

After expenses, this year’s race raised about $7,000, Gordon said.

The race began at 9 a.m. at Maria Stanhope Park and lasted until 10-year-old Emily Winnicki, of Lafayette Township, crossed the finish line 52 minutes later.

“She wore the tag in case she decided to run, but she teamed up with one of her teachers and ended up just walking and chatting,” her mother, Amy, said. “It was a social event.”

Awards were given for the top overall male and female runners; top male and female masters (40 and older) runners; and the top three runners in each age-gender division.

The race also included the annual cookie contest that allowed the runners to vote for their favorite cookie.

This year saw 10 teams comprised of 16 individual bakers.

The award for best cookie went to lemon drop cookies made by Barb Johnson and Sandy Knauf of Seville.

This was the first time two bakers have teamed up. Their team name: Friendship Is Sweet Success.

The two get their name on a plaque bearing a giant cookie and, more importantly, bragging rights until next year.
