Brunswick stabbing suspect arrested

Karl Phelps

BRUNSWICK — Police spent about two hours looking for a 27-year-old homeless man they believe stabbed another man in the chest around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Karl M. Phelps was arrested at about 7:20 p.m. on Aylesworth Drive on the city’s south side, more than 1 mile away from where police said the stabbing took place.

The victim told police he was stabbed by Phelps behind Buehler’s grocery, 3688 Center Road, police spokesman Nick Solar said.

Officers sealed off the Brunswick Lake area and began searching the wooded areas surrounding the lake.

Solar said he couldn’t provide details about the stabbing, including how the two men knew each other and what may have caused the incident. The victim was taken to Southwest General Hospital for treatment.

A news release from the Brunswick Police Department said more information on the stabbing would be released today.
